In Scotland with NetFerry: what to see and where to sleep in Edinburgh

Netferry advises you not to miss a fantastic city, after visiting Scotland's famous  lakes and mountains: the wonderful and fascinating Edinburgh. Let's start to discover what not to miss and the best places to sleep in this city!

Edinburgh: The Gothic Capital of Scotland

The capital of Scotland is a unique and fascinating city. Edinburgh is characterized by ubiquitous gothic style together with glorious green landscapes, but the main attraction of the city is Edinburgh Castle. It dominates the whole town, from the upon the hill. The castle is one of the most visited attractions in Scotland. The full tour of the castle lasts at least two hours and is, in our opinion, well worth it.

After the visit to the castle, walking around the little alleyways of the historical centre is an excellent way to spend the rest of the morning or afternoon. As you wander around, make sure you do not miss the famous Royal Mile – a popular street where you will find the best pubs, restaurants and souvenir shops – and the splendid St. Giles Cathedral, which is built entirely in pure Gothic style.

Another landmark in the old part of Edinburgh is Holyrood Park. Inside the park, you will find a beautiful Victorian garden and Queen Elizabeth's summer residence, which is connected to the old ruins of Holyrood Abbey.

For modern and contemporary art lovers, the two places to go are Edinburgh's Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the Royal Scottish Academy. The Writers' Museum is also fascinating, it exhibits original manuscripts from some great Scottish and English writers like Robert Burns and the author of the famous Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson.

Where to sleep in Edinburgh

If you decide to stay in Edinburgh, bear in mind that prices are generally a little bit higher than those in other cities of Scotland. However, you wouldn't pay more than €300 per night for luxury accommodation. Here's a list of the three places we appreciated the most:

  • The Chester Residence. This high-end, luxury hotel is located in five Georgian buildings in the West End of Edinburgh, and its hospitality is considered to be the best in the city. The professionality at the check-in and the effort from the staff to make everything perfect will make your stay memorable. Prices are between €150 and €200 per night, which is a very reasonable price for a luxury hotel like this.

  • Prestonfield. This hotel is situated 15 minutes away from the historical centre and is a perfect choice for those looking for the famous rustic Scottish hospitality. When you enter the hotel, you feel like you have been catapulted back in time to stay in a real Scottish castle (but with all the comforts of modern life)! The furniture is in keeping with the traditional castle vibe and service is outstanding! Prices for this hotel are between €250 and €300 per night.

  • Hotel Ceilidh-Donia. This budget-friendly hotel is perfect for travellers who don't want to spend a fortune on accommodation and don't mind being slightly out of the city centre. The rooms are spotless, and the hotel is 30 minutes' walk from the historical centre. The staff are very nice and helpful while the rooms are small but very well-equipped. Prices start at €90 per night.
