Netferry's favourite buildings in Copenhagen harbour
Copenhagen port is the largest seaport in Denmark and one of the largest ports in the Baltic Sea basin, it extends from Svanemølle Beach in the north to Hvidovre in the south. In the 1990s the port area and the waterfront were redeveloped after a long period of decline that began in the 1940s. The area went from a polluted, ugly and industrial harbour to a pedestrianized tourist attraction, featuring some of Denmark’s finest architecture, here are a few of our favourite buildings:
Royal Danish Library - The Black Diamond
The Black Diamond in Copenhagen was completed in 1999 as an extension to the Royal Library. The building has a shiny, black facade that mirrors the sea and the sky in the harbour, giving it the appearance of a black diamond. A large incision joins the old and new parts of the building and provides light to the atrium inside. The glass facade is held up by iron girders that weigh approximately one metric tonne per metre! An impressive 200 square-metre painting by Per Kirkeby adorns the ceiling of the building.
The Royal Danish Opera House
You can't miss this building as it is huge, at around 41,000 square metres! Five of the fourteen storeys are underground and the main stage seats 1400 people. The Opera House is clad in German Jura Gelb limestone and in the foyer, there is beautiful Sicilian Perlatino marble. The wall of the auditorium facing the foyer is clad with maple wood, and the ceiling in the main auditorium is adorned with 105,000 sheets of 24-carat gold leaf! It was designed by Danish architect Henning Larsen. In the summer Red Bull cliff divers jump from the overhanging roof which acts a huge diving board!
Amager Bakke / Copenhill
This waste management plant turned ski slope is not on the water but can be seen from the harbour area. It is a truly innovative building that was only finished in 2019. It features a ski slope and the world’s highest climbing wall at 85 meters!
The Royal Danish Playhouse
The playhouse actually has three stages, the Store Scene, Portscene, and Lille Scene with a capacity of 1000. It is worth visiting the building just to have a look inside the lovely foyer or to take a stroll along the oak-boarded gangway that goes around the Playhouse and connects it with the Langelinie promenade. There is also great food and drink available at the Playhouse café and the Ofelia Restaurant, enjoy a coffee with views across the harbor! Or even grab a cocktail at the outdoor bar, which is open from 10:00 - 18:00 each day
