Three unmissable Greek dishes on the Ionian Islands with Netferry

Do you want to experience Greece through good food? Well today, NetFerry sets sail to the Ionian islands on a culinary voyage! Direct ferry connections from mainland Italy to these extraordinarily beautiful islands run during the summer season and depart from many major Italian ports along the East coast.

The Greek culinary tradition brings together a wide range of influences to create some extraordinary flavours! Greece has always been a cultural melting pot in the Mediterranean basin, with many culinary influences that have led to the sumptuous Greek cuisine we taste today. Today we will explore some dishes to try on Corfu, Zakynthos and Kefalonia.

We first dock on the island of Corfu, just across from the heel of Italy and a stone's throw from Albania into the ports of Igoumenitsa or nearby Sivota. Most ferries take less than a couple of hours from Igoumenitsa to the nearby Island of Corfu. Something you have to try on Corfu is Pastisada, a rich stew made with spicy veal, beef or poultry; eaten with either pasta or chips. Traditionally, made with horse meat, this dish dates back to the days when Venice ruled Corfu.

Another prevalent Corfiot dish is a cockerel casserole. Firstly fry sliced onions until they are golden brown, then add the spice mix, which includes cloves, cinnamon, basil and nutmeg, spicy red and black pepper. Then you add some chanterelle mushrooms. To ensure the meat is packed with flavour, Corfiot women have a trick, they make holes in the pieces of meat and stuff the fragrant spices inside! Then add the water and wine and let it boil for about a quarter of an hour. Next, add the passata and leave to cook for half an hour on low heat. Then boil the salted water and cook the pasta to mix in with the meat. Serve the dish with a good sprinkling of cheese.

On the island of Zakynthos, many delicious dishes use fresh fish, or meat, cooked to perfection. Still, one of the most popular snacks in Greece has a particular variety on the island, it's known as Tyropita, a hot puff pastry pie stuffed with feta cheese. They also sometimes contain spinach, meat or other types of cheese, but are always delicious! The pastry is called Filo or phyllo pastry and prepared in very thin sheets.

Finally, on Kefalonia, the most loved dish on the island is salt cod, served with a garlic, oil and lemon and boiled potatoes, the potatoes are mashed in a pestle and mortar and seasoned with these ingredients to give life to the dish, which has brilliant flavour.
