Guide of Kimolos

Kimolos is a volcanic island that was once united with the island of Milos. Aspra is dry and barren and the soil that was formed after volcanic eruptions is not suitable for any type of cultivation. The small local population lives on pastoralism and fishing. The main source of income for the island has come from the production of gypsum since ancient times, which is used in the processing of porcelain. Today it is still extracted and exported all over the world together with kaolin.

Kimolos is a paradise for those who want to spend their holidays away from mass tourism and would rather immerse themselves in unspoiled nature, relaxation and tranquility.  There are some wonderful little fishing villages and the Chora was built in the fourteenth century as a maze to avoid pirate raids. The white cliffs that overlook the sea are very impressive and tourists with revel at their beauty.

History

The name Kimolos is derived from the Greek word 'kimolia' which means chalk. The island underwent the same invasions as Milos, becoming part of the Venetian kingdom during the Fourth Crusade and later dominated by the Ottoman Turks. But pirates had the biggest impact to the island, as many settled here during the Middle Ages and remained on this island until the end of the eighteenth century when they finally abandoned the island after having destroyed it. Some archaeological excavations carried out in the nineteenth century are located in the town of Ellinika and are worth a visit, they show evidence of a natural disaster that occurred in the eighth century BC.

Natural wells and beaches

The natural hot water wells around the island are well worth a visit, it is said that they have healing properties. The beaches are not equipped or organized but are true paradises, in particular Mavrospilia, also Aliki with its stones and Goupa which has wonderful cliffs. There are many wonders on this island that have been forgotten by many, but there are still many wonderful surprises to be discovered here.
