Guide of Patmos

The island of Patmos has a strange, elongated shape and is of volcanic origins, like many other Aegean islands. The island is windy and arid and the landscape is wild and it really has a special charm that will conquer the heart of every tourist. The climate is hot but the island is crossed by the Meltemi winds and beautiful fruit and olive trees cover the landscape. 

Places to visit

Patmos is a place to rest and meditate because it is full of spirituality, natural wonders lie beside sacred places, such as the monastery of St. John, founded by the Theologian in 1088. There is also the cave where the evangelist was said to have written the book of 'Apocalypse' in exile.

The island became the centre of the Greek Orthodox church and was even referred to as "the Jerusalem of the Aegean". There is historical evidence from the multiple invasions on Patmos, the centre of the town, the Chora, was built as a labyrinth to slow down the invading pirates. The monastery of St. John which was also reinforced by defensive walls in the sixteenth century because of invaders. There are also many archaeological sites to visit, including the remains of a temple dedicated to Apollo near the church of Aghios Constantinos.

Beaches

Patmos has lots of leisure and entertainment facilities, as the island of Kos is well equipped for tourists. There are all kinds of sports available, you can go hiking, diving, scuba diving, windsurfing and kitesurfing. The island is full of beaches and coves just waiting to be discovered, both sandy and pebbly. Grigos is a nice sandy beach, then there are Diaofti and Psili Ammos, which are the most famous. The beach of Petra is a marvel with its rosy pebbles and along the coastline of Kambos the beaches of Kambi, Vaghia and Lambi, are all well known for having beautiful, multicoloured pebbles.
