Holland, is the country of tulips and windmills, a place where you can experience both tradition and avant-garde modernity.

History

Inhabited by Celtic and Germanic tribes, Holland was conquered by the Romans and represented the northern border of the Roman Empire. It was later part of the Carolingian empire, until 1581 when the independence was given. In 1800 Napoleon created the Kingdom of Holland and in 1840 the country was divided into North Holland and South Holland.

Places to see in the Netherlands

Amsterdam is fantastic to visit by bike, riding past the canals and colorful houses.  There are brilliant art museums housing works by Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Vermeer and Anne Frank's house. During the spring time you can see fields of blooming tulips. The Hague, on the North Sea, is the seat of the Dutch Parliament and in Binnenhof there is a Gothic style Palazzo Noordeinde, which is still the workplace place of the king of Holland.

Rotterdam, in the south of the country, is an important port city. It is home to the Maritime Museum, which tells the story of city.  There are beautiful houses shops and shops along the canal and the ancient Church of the Pilgrim Fathers, who stopped here before leaving for the Americas in the 17th district, Delfshaven. On the quayside of the river Zaan, close to Amsterdam, the landscape is characterized by traditional Dutch windmills.

Cheese is a staple of Dutch cuisine, Gouda is the most famous and takes its name from the town near Amsterdam where it was originally produced. Speculaas is another typical product, it is spiced biscuit made with cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, pepper, nutmeg and cloves. Do not miss the Broodje, a herring, gherkin and onion sandwich. Stamppot is a hearty dish made from smoked sausages served with mashed potatoes and vegetables such as sauerkraut, carrots, onions and cabbage.
