Gran Canaria is in the Canary archipelago and is known as the ‘miniature continent’a name given to island because of the variety of climates and landscapes it contains, not to mention 60 kilometres of beaches.

History

This land was inhabited as early as 3000 years ago, by an aboriginal population called the Guanches, after this the Spanish invaded and it has remained under their rule ever since. The first tourists came to Gran Canaria about 150 years ago, in search of well-being and relaxation, thanks to its mild climate tourism grew along with the presence of spas and wellness centres.

Places to visit

A large natural park is called Palmitos Park, located in the southern part of the island and surrounded by tourist villages and areas of interest. There is also the area of Maspalomas on the southern coast, which attracts many tourists because it is like a mini dessert that emulates the sand dunes of the Sahara. It is a stretch of dunes around 25 kilometres long, in a shifting landscape that is shaped by the winds. Do not miss the Painted Cave and the remains of an ancient Canarian aboriginal village, there is also a museum and an archaeological park. The village of Agaete is a good place to take a break in the salt pools to admire the landscape and little white houses.

Beaches

Gran Canaria has many great beaches, including Playa de las Canteras, which has golden sand and calm, clear waters. There is also the small beach of Porto di Mogan, which has a great view and some characteristic architecture.
