The port of the island of Kythira is located on the eastern side of the island. For centuries the island has been an important trading point, but it was only in the beginning of the 1900s that they decided to build a port in Agia Pelagia. This became the main port on the island up until the mid-nineties and has become an important stop for tourist ferries and private boats. During that time it was decided that they would build a new pier near Diakofti, along with a connecting road, to serve passenger ships and ferries. Diakofti port is about 14 kilometers from Kythira airport.
